The Great f88 RPG Discussion Thread

Welcome, one and all, to the Great RPG Debate! We Sherbros all have pretty varied taste in video games, some of us being hardcore FPS players while others are really into indy games, and everything inbetween. There is, however, one genre(or sub genre)of video game that pretty much everyone enjoys.... and that, is the ROLE PLAYING GAME! Take action, make choices and deal with consequences, build your stats and abilities, form a party of trusted allies to do battle against the hordes of evil, customize your character! These are just some of the gameplay actions you can take in a game that make an RPG experience come to life unlike any other types of video games.

RPGs have long been my favorite genre in the industry. Long hours ahve been spent pushing from one save point to another, collecting all the hidden items and visiting all the secret areas you can find. I've always found RPG story lines to just be more fantastic, more out there, and therefore more engaging than most single player games(obviously with exceptions). With varied casts of characters, you can build your team the way you like, focusing on having the party member support and complement your own character's abilities. I'm also fond of my choices in game having noticeable and discernible effects in the game world.

Of course there have been hits and misses within the genre, as with all catagories. For instance, I want to like Far Cry 3... the game is just very repetitive and there is no real reason to push forward in the story very far... after all, once you're out and about, all you do is infiltrate enemy bases over and over and pray a tiger doesn't eat your face. The game is fun at times, it just isn't a great example of a well thought out RPG. Compare that to a similar game in Skyrim(or Fallout3/NV)and you can easily see the fundamental differences in a good RPG and fun game with RPG like qualities.

So, let's hear it, f88... What RPGs are you currently playing? What game play mechanics do you like or dislike in these types of games? JRPGs vs Western RPGS? I myself sharpened my teeth on quite a few JRPGs growing up, and then I played Oblivion. I'm a huge fan of open worlds and character creation, those are probably the two things I enjoy most in gaming, period.

I just started Persona 3 FES today. I only played for 45 minutes to an hour, up to after the first battle and unlocking of my Persona(Orpheus looked bad.ass, especially when it went berserker like that)and I can already tell I am going to be addicted to these games. P3F is my first Persona, I've put about 30 hours into SMT4, which was my first MegaTen game ever. Any tips for P3F are appreciated, heh.
