What were you like when you first started training to fight?

(this is boxing)

So I haven't legit trained in a gym since I was a teenager and I'm coming off a 5 year disability, and today finally managed to get back into it. I've hung around another gym with my mates when it's quiet but other than that I haven't really been training.

It was a group session, started out with warmups, 20 seconds of 6 different exercises x 5, then 5min x 4 jump rope, bag work 2x5, mitt work 5 mins followed by cool downs. There were no pointers or tips on hw to do anything. They handed me a jump rope, I guess assuming I knew how to use it - I did but it's beside the point. Went hitting the heavy bag and for all they know I didn't know what a jab looked like, there was just no pointers.

Firstly, on the jump rope I kept hitting my feet at least once a min. A bit embarrassing since I was the only one doing it. Secondly, on the mitts I kept getting mixed up with the commands, for example if he said to throw a right I couldn't think properly and threw a left. I was wondering if other people had similar problems the first time round. It was a session with just 3 other people and two coaches and I was the only noob in the room as far as I know so I was wondering what kind of experiences other people had.

Otherwise the session was fine - just tiring. Have to say I'm not fond of the group format though. It bothered me at the start but I soaked into it quickly - just reminds me too much of boxercise. Thing is I think some of those warmups are a waste of time because they're not as effective as some of the others I know of, but I'm not about to tell the coach to do something better. I warm up before leaving anyway.

It costs a fiver normally but the first one was free.
