I watched this movie a few days ago, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't see a thread discussing it. I know we have a lot of Arrow fans, so I figure that Caity Lotz's performance would appeal to them. I also became a huge fan of Toby Stephens during this seminal season of Starz's Black Sails.
The yarn splays a bit towards the end, but the beginning possesses one of the more elegant hard sci-fi settings created recently. It's cold, mysterious, warped, exciting. There is a sense of exploration and constriction at the same time. Toby's character has this enigmatic draw- this powerful presence. For me he is one of the most exciting actors to have emerged in the past several years. The damn English. They're so good.
The story lays a great deal of philosophical subtext as it unfolds. I particularly love the soundtrack. God it's good. For the most part it recalls the dystopic sci-fi soundtracks from the early 80's like Blade Runner; however, there are times, or at least one in particular that stands out to me, representing a sense of hope and discovery, where the soundtrack distinctly changes and became more warm like the child-oriented science fiction of the 80's: stuff like E.T. and The Neverending Story. You won't miss that classic synthesizer sound.
It is definitely one of the smaller films this year worth viewing. It debuts in two days at Tribeca, and then hits a limited release on the 25th.
