I've joined a new Muay Thai gym recently and no one ever wears headgear during sparring. The sparring sessions generally start off around the medium intensity and finish with people going pretty hard, enough to rock you.
Now, I'd love to wear my headgear since if I can reduce the damage inflicted onto my brain (and stop cuts and bruises along the way), then I can't see why I wouldn't want to do it. However, because no one else in the gym wears any kind of headgear, I'm kind of feeling a bit shy sticking it on. First, I don't want it to look like an invitation to go balls out on me. Second, I do like to myself turn the heat up sometimes and I'm worried my sparring partners might think I'm not afraid to do so because I'm wearing headgear and they're not.
What are your thoughts on this situation? Has anyone ever had a similar experience?
My GF tells me that as soon as I'll start wearing mine, others will start wearing theirs :) I don't think it'll be the case though, as I doubt many of the guys that come to the gym will have their own headgear and the gym doesn't supply any.
