Just checked what the finishing rate of the current UFC champions is after winning the title / being promoted to champion.
Cain: 2/2
JBJ: 4/6
Weidman: 1/1
Hendricks: n/a
Pettis: n/a
Aldo: 2/6
Barao: 3/3
MM: 2/3
Ronda: 3/3
So among those champions who have already defended their belts, there is a fairly high percentage of fighters who actually finish their bouts. Aldo is not among them.
Now what does this mean? Are the other champs simply that much better than the rest of their respective divisions?
IMO, it's probably rather simple. FW, LW and WW as "intermediate" weight classes have an extreme density of quality talent towards the top of the divisions. It's thus likely going to be more difficult to finish than in lighter or heavier weight classes.
Opinions?
