Efficiency - Roadwork Distance

Hi,

Just wondering at what point in jogging/roadwork does significant drop off in benefits for the workout occur? I run on a treadmill with track distances or an actual track and for a while I was just clocking in 16-18 laps a day (would set to go uphill if on a treadmill) in about 35 minutes, and now that university is over and i'm back in the boxing gym, i run less often but at more distance. Started with basically every other day running 20 laps, that lasted for two weeks, and now i've bumped it up to 25 laps every other day, and will likely increase by 1 lap each week going forward. However, a non-trainer/professional did tell me there comes a point when running longer has relatively insignificant gains...so i'm wasting my time in running so long. Then just recently i watched a documentary and i stumbled upon joe calzaghe saying he runs only 1.5 miles going uphill per day and that's it...and from his career that clearly worked out for him.

So my question to you guys...do you think and when do you think you're no longer gaining anything from roadwork? I want to start thinking of efficiency in workouts more than before and figured this is a good place to start. If i stop gaining after 15 laps and i'm doing 10 more for no reason....i'll have to change that. Thanks sherdog family.
