Sharena Taylor, of Syracuse, is accused of bilking $71,441.01 from welfare, more than twice as much as the second-highest alleged offender. Two others are accused of stealing more than $30,000 and four others more than $20,000. "There are few frauds more egregious than people who apply for and use public assistance benefits when they are not eligible," District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said. "They are not only stealing from tax paying citizens, they hurt those who truly need public assistance." |

Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse woman accused of stealing $71,040.27 in welfare worked as a hairdresser for the last seven years, according to court paperwork. Sharena Taylor, 37, faces three felonies on charges she improperly claimed $44,146.27 in public assistance and $26,894 in food stamps from January 2007 to April 13, 2013. Taylor was sent to the Onondaga County jail with bail set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. She remained there this afternoon. |
