Leglocks in Training & IBJJF Rules

Watching the latest episode of This Week in BJJ made me think about leglocks in training.

At my previous school everybody from white to black belt would basically go for any leglock in training, with the exception of heel-hooks.

But how is it elsewhere? Do you follow IBJJF rules strictly and avoid most leglocks until you're a brown belt, even in training? Do you make a difference between gi and no gi? And what if you're, say, a blue belt but you're rolling against a brown belt? Would it then be ok to go for a kneebar? (not that you'll get it…).

I know there's no single answer, but I'm just curious to know how everybody approaches that.

Obviously I personally think the best way is for everybody to train leglocks from day one since they're not inherently more dangerous than other joint locks, but I also don't want to be the jerk who uses illegal moves to get surprise taps.
